11 Inmates Freed, Seven Granted Bail at Awka Medium Security Custodial Center

Eleven inmates who had spent between two and six years awaiting trial at the Medium Security Custodial Center in Awka have regained their freedom, while seven others were granted bail as the Anambra State Chief Judge, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu, concluded the 2024 jail delivery exercise.

Among those released was Mr. Ernest Nwakama, who had been in detention for six years. Barrister Chinedu Nwankwo, who represented several of the inmates, including Mr. Nwakama and Chinecherem Nwoye (granted bail), provided his legal services pro bono as a way of giving back to society. Barrister Nwankwo commended Justice Anyachebelu for ensuring justice prevailed in the reviewed cases.

Speaking after the court session, Justice Anyachebelu explained that the routine jail delivery exercise aims to review cases of inmates who have experienced prolonged delays in trial, those with serious health conditions, and other special circumstances. He also praised the cleanliness and orderliness of the custodial facility during his visit.

Barrister Raymond Nwankwo, the Deputy Comptroller of Corrections and officer-in-charge of the facility, urged the released individuals to make productive use of the skills they acquired during their time at the custodial center. He encouraged them to reintegrate into society as responsible and self-reliant individuals.

The jail delivery exercise underscores the commitment of the Anambra State judiciary to addressing issues of delayed justice and overcrowding in correctional facilities.
