2024 Floods: Gov’t Sets Up Response Action Plan Committee

The Anambra State Government through the Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim has met with the honourable commissioner for Environment, Engr Dr Felix Odimegwu, Transition Committee Chairmen and select stakeholders where they came up with a swift response action committee aimed at mitigating the impact of impending flood in the state.

The meeting was held at the deputy governor’s office, government house, Awka and geared towards ensuring swift response, camp management, deployment of security personnel to the various flood holding centers in the state amongst others.

In his remarks, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Ibezim commended the efforts of TC Chairmen for clearing and fumigating various holding centers in their localities. He stated that the meeting was a call to action which according to him was in line with Prof Soludo’s plan to mitigate the impact of the impending flood on the lives and properties of Ndi Anambra.

On his part, the Commissioner for Environment in the state, Engr Felix Odimegwu expressed happiness for the swift response while assuring that he would liaise with all agencies, TC Chairmen, community leaders involved to ensure that those affected will be safe and secure.

The TC Chairman of Anambra East LGA, Sir Ifeanyichukwu Chinweze while making remarks outlined various actions already taken by his local action committee to ensure that the people are not stranded when flooding begins.

He called on higher authorities to provide materials on time so that the flood victims will be better taken care of.

The meeting resolved to: 1. Ensure the presence of OCHA brigade officers in holding centers to maintain law and order, provide games and training in centers to keep evacuees engaged. 2. Encourage evacuation by road instead of water to minimize casualties and loss of life. 3. Grouping of victims in centers for ease of personal identification.
