Oluwatimilehin Doko, a member of Team Ogun representing Nigeria, has made history as the youngest champion at the 2024 African Scrabble Championship held in Kigali, Rwanda. The 24-year-old University of Lagos student emerged as the overall winner, securing his title after a decisive 574-442 victory over Mumeen Jimoh, another Ogun State player, in round 31. Doko completed the tournament with an impressive record of 25 wins, 7 losses, and a cumulative 2244 points.

Jimoh, who also represented Ogun, achieved an impressive fourth-place finish with 21 wins, while African Youth Champion David Ojih ranked sixth, showcasing Ogun State’s strength in African scrabble. Adebisi Adekansi, an African Games gold medallist, claimed the first runner-up title behind Nigerian Mayuku Tuoyo, underscoring the dominance of Nigerian players at the event.

Ogun State Commissioner for Sports Development Wasiu Isiaka praised Doko and Team Ogun’s performance, especially with the 2024 National Sports Festival just months away. Isiaka expressed pride in their achievements and thanked the Ogun State Scrabble Association, coaches, and the Sports Council for their support. He acknowledged Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun’s dedication to sports development in Ogun, which has helped propel the athletes to success.

“Congratulations, Oluwatimilehin Doko! Your triumph is a proud moment for Ogun State,” Isiaka said, anticipating future victories for Team Ogun.
