64 Nigerian Students Graduate from Sudan Universities Amid Conflict

A total of 64 Nigerian students from Sudan International University (SIU) and Hayat University College have graduated in Sokoto State, Nigeria. The graduation ceremony, which took place on Saturday, celebrated the students’ achievements following their relocation due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The partnership between the Sudanese institutions and Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) facilitated the students’ continued education.

Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu, represented by Higher Education Commissioner Alhaji Aminu Abdullahi, commended the initiative, emphasizing the government’s commitment to education. He also acknowledged that some of the graduates were sponsored by the state government. Aliyu reiterated the state’s focus on education, with one-third of the 2024 budget allocated to it.

UDUS Vice-Chancellor Prof. Bashir Garba, represented by Prof. S. A. Sa’idu, praised the collaboration, noting its positive impact on the students. SIU President Prof. Bakri Osman, represented by Dr. Abdulgafar Saeed, thanked the Sokoto State Government and UDUS for their support despite the challenging situation in Sudan.

Parents of the graduates expressed pride in their children’s achievements, with Malam Ali M. Ali, Managing Director of NAN, urging the graduates to be good ambassadors of their families and Nigeria, particularly in their service as doctors.

The ceremony highlighted the resilience and dedication of both the students and the institutions involved in ensuring the continuity of education despite the obstacles posed by the Sudan conflict.
