Around 70 men and women aged 80 and above were honoured during the “Ugo Okenye 2024” celebration in Awkuzu community, recognizing their contributions as elders.
Following the presentation of certificates and decorations, several celebrants, including the Traditional Ruler of Awkuzu, Igwe Professor Charles Anikweze, Chief Francis Okafor, Chief Leo Ojemenni, and Mrs. Monica Mokwugwo, expressed their gratitude for the recognition and pledged to continue serving the community in their esteemed roles.
The Traditional Ruler of Umueri, Igwe Ben Emeka, who joined the event and had the honour of decorating Igwe Anikweze, praised old age as a divine blessing. He congratulated the honorees for God’s grace in their lives.
Dr. Emem Omokaro, Director General of the National Senior Citizens Centre, Abuja, was represented by Mr. Omini Oden, Head of Corporate Affairs, Media and Communications. Also in attendance was Iyom Josephine Anenih, Co-Chairperson of the National Senior Citizens Centre Consultative Forum on Ageing and former Minister of Women Affairs. Both expressed their delight at seeing more communities honor their elders, aligning the celebration with the Centre’s mandate to promote the well-being of senior citizens.
