In a significant breakthrough, the Anambra State Police Command has announced the arrest of seven individuals suspected of involvement in cultism and armed robbery. According to a press statement released by the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the arrests were made following diligent police work.
The suspects were apprehended during a patrol by officers from the Special Anti-Cult Squad at UNIZIK Junction in Awka. Among the items recovered were a cut-size double barrel gun, an unregistered tricycle, and a quantity of illicit drugs.
The arrested individuals include Chukwuemka Ozoekwe (18), Chidozie Anagor (18), Chukwuemeka Oyeoka (18), Ebuka Okoye (17), Olisa Obi (19), Chidubem Nwakwu (20), and Nwankwo Kosisochukwu. Additionally, the police are actively pursuing Makuo Nwuso, alias “Baby,” and another unidentified individual.
During interrogation, the suspects confessed to being members of the Vipers Cult group, implicated in recent criminal activities in the Awka metropolis. They admitted to planning robberies targeting pedestrians for their phones and personal belongings.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Fidelis Ogarabe, who oversees Finance and Administration and is currently serving as the Acting Commissioner of Police, commended the operatives for their diligence. He urged them to maintain their efforts in combating crime across the state, emphasizing the importance of sustained vigilance and proactive policing.
