The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Anambra State Council, has elected a new executive team to lead the association for the next three years. The election took place during the triennial delegates conference, which was attended by notable figures, including the wife of the Anambra State Governor, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, and Commissioners Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh (Education), Mrs. Ify Obinabo (Women Affairs), and Dr. Afam Obidike (Health). The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Anambra State Council, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, was also present.
Comrade Toochukwu Ifejika from Radio Nigeria was re-elected and inaugurated as the Chairperson of the council, running unopposed. Other unopposed and elected members include Comrade Chikodi Chukwuleta, a state information officer, as Auditor, and Comrade Faith Onyemuche from Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) as Assistant Secretary. Elections for the positions of Vice Chairperson, Secretary, and Treasurer will be scheduled later.
National Chairperson of NAWOJ, Mrs. Ashia Bura, urged the newly elected executives to be proactive and dedicated in their duties to enhance the association’s impact.
In her acceptance speech, Comrade Ifejika expressed her gratitude for the support and pledged to advance the association’s goals. She committed to championing the rights of women journalists, advocating for gender equality in the media, and ensuring the safety and professional growth of members.
Speakers at the conference highlighted the importance of ethical journalism and the vital role women play in shaping media narratives. They called for increased support for female journalists, particularly in terms of safety and professional development.
