A one-day sensitization workshop on the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) concluded in Awka, calling on Ndi Igbo to leverage the scheme for cost-effective exploration and importation of goods with reduced customs duties.
The workshop, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, drew stakeholders in trade and services, industrialists, manufacturers, and industry leaders from all South East states.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, represented by Ambassador Obinna Onowu, emphasized the relevance of the theme “Exploring the Benefits of ETLS in Nigeria.” He noted that the workshop, already held in other regions, is particularly significant in the South East, especially Anambra State, known for its entrepreneurial spirit.
Ambassador Onowu highlighted that ETLS allows Nigerians to export goods and services freely within ECOWAS member states, reducing the burden of export and import duties. He mentioned that Nigeria currently has 946 enterprises and over 10,000 products benefiting from this scheme.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, addressed the attendees, underscoring the state’s commitment to fostering business growth through infrastructure development and initiatives like the Igba Boy scheme, which trains young entrepreneurs. He praised ETLS for facilitating the free flow of goods and services within ECOWAS, contributing to regional economic integration.
Governor Soludo also highlighted the state’s efforts in promoting agricultural development through the annual distribution of coconut and palm seedlings, aiming to distribute 1.3 million seedlings, including coconuts, palm, bitter kola, and breadfruit, across Anambra. He stressed the importance of promoting Made-in-Nigeria products to boost the national economy.
In their presentations, Mr. Yohana Kezaks explained the differences between ETLS and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), while Mr. Adekunle Obatimehi from the Nigeria Export Promotion Council discussed export incentives. They emphasized the benefits of regional integration, infrastructure development, capacity building, and sustainable development, noting that focusing on exports can earn foreign exchange, increase sales, and boost profit volumes.
Sir Humphrey Ngonadi, President of the South East and South South Chamber of Commerce, delivered a goodwill message, highlighting the importance of information in business and human development. He thanked the organizers for choosing Anambra as the venue for the event.
Other notable attendees included Ebonyi State Governor Chief Francis Nwifuru, represented by his Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Oguzo Ofia-Nwali, the Chief Administration Officer in the Federal Ministry of Finance, Mr. Adamu Nurudeen, and Anambra State Commissioner of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Christian Udechukwu.
