Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has committed to ensuring that students at Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, fully benefit from the Federal Government’s student loan program administered by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund.
Speaking on Thursday at LASU’s 27th Convocation, Sanwo-Olu emphasized his administration’s dedication to empowering students in state-owned tertiary institutions. “We aim to foster a generation of innovative thinkers, problem-solvers, and great leaders who will drive sustainable development in Lagos State and beyond,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu assured that the Lagos State Government would collaborate with the Nigerian Education Loan Fund to expedite the inclusion of students from state-owned institutions in the national student loan program. “We will ensure that students of Lagos State University fully benefit from this laudable policy,” he added.
The governor also highlighted the importance of academic excellence, urging society to value it as highly as artistic and sporting success. “Our young people must see reason to hunger for it with the same energy and enthusiasm reserved these days for artistic and sporting success,” he said.
During the ceremony, Sanwo-Olu congratulated Olaniyi Mubaraq Olawale, the best graduating student for the 2022/2023 session from the Accounting Education Department, who achieved a CGPA of 4.98. In recognition of Olawale’s achievement, Sanwo-Olu announced a cash gift of N10 million. “Congratulations to you, Olaniyi. This is a moment of great pride for all of us,” he stated, encouraging other students to strive for similar excellence.
In her convocation speech, LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, acknowledged the achievements of the graduates, including 89 Doctors of Philosophy and 66 professional doctoral degree recipients. “Today’s ceremony marks a symbolic moment of fulfillment and pride for our graduands who have demonstrated exemplary character and academic prowess,” she said.
