The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, has initiated a major tree planting campaign in Awka aimed at combating climate change and promoting environmental sustainability.
The event, held in Awka, saw the attendance of government officials, environmental activists, community members, and other stakeholders. Mrs. Soludo emphasized the critical role of tree planting in mitigating climate change, enhancing air quality, and preserving biodiversity. She described the initiative as a key component of the state government’s broader environmental conservation efforts.
Highlighting her “Healthy Living With Nonye Soludo” initiative, Mrs. Soludo stated that trees are vital to the ecosystem, contributing to global efforts against climate change and beautifying the environment.
In his opening remarks, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Felix Odimegwu, discussed the “One House, Two Trees” campaign, which mandates every landowner to plant at least two trees within their compound. Additionally, the 35% green spacing initiative requires every land developer to dedicate 35% of their land to green areas, including gardens and tree cover.
Dr. Odimegwu announced that June 10th has been designated as Anambra Tree Planting Day, a date included in the environmental bill before the House of Assembly. He emphasized the state’s commitment to enhancing ecological and climate resilience through tree planting and urban forestation initiatives.
The Acting Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Prof. Kate Omenugha, expressed her support and pledged to ensure the campaign’s success.
Commissioner for Industry, Mr. Christian Udechukwu, and Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba, praised the developmental strides of the Soludo administration in agriculture and environmental management. They noted that the initiative is expected to mobilize thousands of volunteers, including students, to participate in planting and caring for the trees, urging the community to join hands in making Anambra a livable, smart mega-city.
The Managing Director of the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWMA), Sir Mike Ozoemena, and Chairman of the Anambra Urban Regeneration Council, Architect Michael Okonkwo, emphasized the initiative’s focus on securing a greener future for upcoming generations, pledging their full participation in the tree planting process.
The event concluded with the symbolic planting of the first set of trees, setting the stage for extensive tree planting activities planned throughout the state.
