Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup have been severely compromised following a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic. The Super Eagles, who were hoping to rebound from their 1-1 draw with South Africa last Friday, began the match on a positive note with Raphael Onyedika’s excellent first-half finish.
However, the momentum shifted as the Beninese team scored twice before the interval, with goals from Jodel Dossou and Steve Mounie, leaving Finidi George’s men trailing at halftime.
The defeat places Benin Republic at the top of Group C with seven points, while Nigeria lags in fifth position with only three points, putting their World Cup aspirations in serious doubt.
