Governor Chukwuma Soludo has visited the site of a five-story building collapse at Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS) in Onitsha. The building, which was under construction, collapsed early yesterday morning. Governor Soludo, represented by his Deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, was present to oversee the ongoing rescue efforts involving the Red Cross Society, medical personnel, and volunteers.
The rescue operation was supported by three ambulances and two evacuator machines. As of the latest report, one of the three individuals trapped in the debris has been successfully rescued.
In an interview with ABS, Hon. Jude Umennajiego, representing Onitsha South Two in the Anambra State House of Assembly, described the incident as tragic but expressed relief that there were no fatalities. He assured that investigations would be conducted to assess the integrity of the materials used in the building to determine the cause of the collapse and assign responsibility.
Hon. Justice Azuka, representing Onitsha North One constituency, praised Governor Soludo for his proactive response and presence at the scene. He criticized the contractor for the poor quality of construction and lamented the frequent occurrences of building collapses in the state.
Rescue operations continue to focus on freeing the remaining two trapped individuals. Governor Soludo, along with the Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba, remains actively involved in overseeing the efforts.
