The Anambra State Government has offered an appointment to Ms. Tania Okpala, a former tennis star who gained attention after a video of her wandering the streets of Awka went viral on social media six months ago.
The announcement was made by Mrs. Nonye Soludo, the governor’s wife, at the Governor’s Lodge in Amawbia, while providing an update on Ms. Okpala’s recovery journey.
Following the viral video, Mrs. Soludo immediately contacted the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare to facilitate Ms. Okpala’s rehabilitation. The state government committed to supporting her full recovery and reintegration into society.
Addressing journalists, Mrs. Soludo revealed that Tania has been appointed as a Special Assistant to the Governor on Social Works under the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare. This role will enable Tania to use her personal story to positively influence and support young people, particularly women and children.
Mrs. Soludo described Tania’s recovery as miraculous and an inspiring story for humanity. She also mentioned that Tania is now living in private staff quarters at the Governor’s Official Residence and has been enrolled in the Psychology program at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
The state government will continue to monitor Tania’s progress through her family to ensure she maximizes the opportunities provided to her.
Tania’s father, Mr. Joel Okpala, expressed profound gratitude to the state government, highlighting the significant impact on his daughter’s life. He acknowledged that the family had previously attempted various unconventional methods to help her, without success. He thanked Mrs. Soludo for her dedicated efforts in Tania’s recovery.
Tania herself expressed enthusiasm about her new role and her commitment to serving Anambra State. She thanked Mrs. Soludo for her unwavering support and for treating her like a daughter throughout her recovery period.
Over the past six months, Tania has been under Mrs. Soludo’s care, attending psychological appointments and resuming lawn tennis training.
