The Edo State government has strongly condemned the rape and murder of 22-year-old Glory Adekolure, a recent graduate of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), who was tragically killed in Iyowa Community, Benin City on Monday.
According to reports, Adekolure was on her way home after processing her clearance when she was allegedly tortured, raped, and killed by unknown assailants. Her body was discovered near her mother’s residence.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, Governor Godwin Obaseki expressed shock and sadness over the incident. The governor has directed the state Commissioner of Police, CP Funsho Adegboye, to apprehend the perpetrators within the next seven days.
“The Edo State Government is shocked and deeply saddened by the gruesome murder of Adekolure Idowu Glory, a fresh graduate of UNIBEN, who was allegedly raped and killed by yet-to-be-identified persons in Iyowa Community, within the Benin metropolis,” Nehikhare stated.
He continued, “It is most disheartening to hear of the sad incident and the state government condemns, in the strongest terms, the dastardly and unconscionable act.”
Governor Obaseki extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the victim and emphasized the urgency of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
“Adekolure was said to have left home for the institution for her clearance on June 13, 2024, but returned lifeless,” the statement added.
The tragic incident has sparked outrage on social media, with @softbaba24 identifying the victim as his younger sister and detailing that she was returning home from school when the brutal attack occurred.
The Edo State government remains committed to ensuring justice for Adekolure and calls for swift action to apprehend those responsible for the heinous crime.
