The Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West, Dr. James Odedeji, has called for peace ahead of planned nationwide protests against the cost of living crisis and economic hardship in Nigeria. The protests, organized by some Nigerians, are scheduled to take place from August 1-10, 2024.
Speaking in Lagos on Monday at the announcement of the annual peace award and investiture organized by the Apostles of Peace Society International, Bishop Odedeji stressed the need for peace despite the economic challenges facing the country. He highlighted the theme of this year’s event, “Peace in Nigeria,” as particularly relevant in light of the current anger, hunger, inflation, and tension.
Addressing journalists, Bishop Odedeji acknowledged the widespread hunger in the country and questioned, “How do we solve our differences at this critical time?” He emphasized the importance of peaceful solutions during these turbulent times.
The peace award event will feature the investiture of notable figures such as Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun State Governor; Sir Obi Okafor, Group CEO of Blue Star Group; and Captain Ado Sanusi, CEO of Aero Contractors. The lecture will be delivered by Prof. Folashade Ogunsola, Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos.
As part of the peace advocacy, Bishop Odedeji emphasized the need to remind the government of its promises to improve citizens’ lives. He stated, “The government also needs to be reminded of the sensitivity of human existence because when the poor cannot eat, the rich will not be able to sleep. You cannot beat a child and tell him not to cry.”
He warned that societal discontent leads to crime when people feel neglected and take the law into their own hands. The event aims to create a platform for dialogue between the government and citizens to find a way forward.
