The Anambra State Government has initiated a crackdown on unauthorized structures with the launch of “Operation Show Your Building Permit.” This new policy aims to address the widespread issue of illegal buildings across the state and ensure compliance with established building codes.
The operation, led by the Development Control Enforcement team under the leadership of Barr. Chike Maduekwe, Chairman of the Anambra State Physical Planning Board, kicked off on Thursday. The team conducted a demolition exercise in Woliwo Fegge, Onitsha South Council Area, where illegal perimeter fences and shanties were dismantled.
Barr. Maduekwe stated that the initiative is a necessary step to enforce building regulations, as many developers have been constructing without proper approval, disregarding the authority of the government. He attributed the proliferation of illegal structures to land disputes and a lack of proper documentation, adding that those responsible would face arrest and prosecution.
Emphasizing the need for a safe and orderly building environment, Maduekwe pointed out that the operation aligns with the governor’s vision for a well-regulated society. He also highlighted the challenges faced during previous enforcement attempts, including resistance from thugs and allegedly compromised police officers.
With “Operation Show Your Building Permit” now in effect, all ongoing building projects in the state have been suspended, pending validation of their permits. The operation is set to expand to other parts of Anambra State, signaling a new era in the enforcement of building regulations.
