The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, has affirmed that the Assembly is constitutionally empowered to enact laws governing local government elections and the general administration of the Local Government Areas in the state.
Speaking on the recent announcement of the local government election by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) and the subsequent amendment of relevant sections of the ANSIEC law by the State Assembly, Right Honourable Udeze emphasized that amendments were necessary given that the last local government election in the state took place over a decade ago. He noted that certain sections of the law needed updating to align with current realities.
Addressing reports circulating on social media suggesting a crisis within the State Assembly, the Speaker dismissed such claims as baseless and diversionary. He clarified that the amendments to a few sections of the ANSIEC law were supported by twenty-six out of the thirty lawmakers in the Assembly, largely due to the merits of the changes.
Right Honourable Udeze commended the lawmakers for their commitment to the interests of the people through their legislative work. He stressed that the amendments were made in the best interest of Ndi Anambra and to ensure the smooth operation of the state’s twenty-one Local Government Areas. He also called on individuals attempting to undermine the integrity of the State Assembly to desist immediately.
Furthermore, the Speaker assured that the eighth Anambra State House of Assembly under his leadership remains independent and free from the influence or control of any external authority. He reiterated the Assembly’s dedication to contributing significantly to the peace and development of Anambra State.
