A Nigerian woman based in Canada, identified as Amaka Sunnberger, is currently under investigation by the Toronto Police Service for making threats to poison Nigerians of Yoruba and Benin origins. The investigation follows a viral video in which Sunnberger made alarming statements during a TikTok live session, vowing to carry out mass killings of these ethnic groups.
Sergeant Bassey Osagie, a representative of the Toronto Police, confirmed that the matter had been reported and was under active investigation.
The incident has sparked significant outrage, leading the Nigerian House of Representatives and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) to petition Canadian authorities, demanding a thorough investigation and prosecution of Sunnberger. The petition was addressed to the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Jamie Christoff, highlighting the seriousness of Sunnberger’s threats and their potential consequences.
In the video, Sunnberger, who claimed to reside in Ontario, Canada, stated that she would begin poisoning the food and water of Yoruba and Benin individuals at her workplace. Her comments have been widely condemned as promoting hate and violence.
Following the video’s circulation, the Chairman of NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, publicly identified Sunnberger and sent a petition to the Mayor of Brampton, Patrick Brown, to draw attention to the seriousness of the threats.
In response to the House of Representatives’ demand for her prosecution, Sunnberger appeared in another video dismissing the possibility of her arrest, boasting about her Canadian citizenship. Speaking in Pidgin English, she taunted those calling for her deportation, stating, “I be Canada pikin,” which translates to “I am a Canadian child.”
Her inflammatory statements included detailed threats of poisoning Yoruba and Benin people, using various toxic substances, and encouraging others to commit similar acts of violence. Sunnberger’s rhetoric has raised concerns about the potential for hate-fueled actions and has drawn widespread condemnation from both Nigerian and Canadian communities.
The situation has escalated into an international incident, with both countries’ authorities now involved in addressing the threat and ensuring the safety of those targeted.
