The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Akure Zone has raised concerns over the mistreatment of its members in various Nigerian universities, including Lagos State University (LASU), Ambrose Alli University (AAUE), Kogi State University (KSU), Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU).
In a press statement issued by the ASUU Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Adéolá Egbédòkun, the union highlighted a series of issues, including wrongful dismissals, denial of promotions, non-payment of salaries, and failure to remit deductions meant for union activities.
The statement emphasized that ASUU members were being targeted for standing up for their rights and performing their duties with integrity. Dr. Egbédòkun condemned the actions of the university authorities, stating, “Our members are being punished for their commitment to truth and integrity in their professional roles.”
ASUU also decried delays in court rulings and the failure to reinstate wrongfully dismissed lecturers, particularly noting cases at Kogi State University and Lagos State University. The union further criticized the lack of funding at COOU, which it said is severely affecting staff welfare.
ASUU is calling on the Governing Councils and Visitors of these universities to address the issues and reinstate all wrongfully dismissed members, resolve withheld promotions, and ensure third-party deductions are properly remitted to the union. The union stressed the need for immediate action to restore peace and create a conducive working environment for academic staff.
