The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested Khadija Aliyu for allegedly stealing a seven-day-old baby girl during a naming ceremony in the Keffi area of the state. Additionally, an ex-convict, Hussaini Mohammed, was apprehended for allegedly stealing motorcycles in the same region.
According to a statement from the command’s Public Relations Officer, Rahman Nansel, Khadija was arrested around 6:30 PM on Saturday. She reportedly pretended to be pregnant and entered the home where the naming ceremony was taking place. While the guests were occupied, she sneaked in and took the baby, who had been laid to sleep.
Nansel detailed the suspect’s method, stating, “She carried the baby on her back, covered her with a veil, and escaped before she was tracked down by police operatives.”
In a separate incident, the police also arrested Hussaini Mohammed during an investigation into motorcycle thefts in the area. Nansel noted that Mohammed, who was recently released from a correctional facility, was found with three motorcycles suspected to be stolen.
“The Commissioner of Police, Umar Shehu Nadada, has urged members of the public who have reported stolen motorcycles to visit the Angwan Lambu Division in Keffi with proof of ownership to claim their items,” Nansel added.
These arrests come amid increasing concerns over child theft and motorcycle theft in the region, following a similar incident reported in July 2023, where a 19-year-old woman in Bauchi State was arrested for stealing a newborn baby.
