Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, welcomed a delegation of psychologists from the Department of Psychology at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, to his office at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat on Tuesday.
Led by Prof. Michael Ezenwa, Director of the International Consortium of Universities for Drug Reduction (ICUDOR) Nigeria, and former President of the Nigerian Psychological Association, the group expressed their desire to collaborate with the commissioner and the state government to enhance governance in Anambra.
Prof. Ezenwa praised Dr. Mefor, noting his dual expertise as a journalist and psychologist, and commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for recognizing his skills. He assured that the team of psychologists was ready to assist the government in promoting the state’s development, highlighting the governor’s focus on infrastructure and security.
Prof. Chidozie Nwafor, Head of UNIZIK’s Psychology Department, reiterated their commitment to supporting the state through research, psychoeducation, and initiatives aimed at behavioral change.
In response, Dr. Mefor appreciated the team for their support, emphasizing the underutilization of psychology in Nigeria’s national development. He welcomed the opportunity to work together, mentioning the recent creation of the Anambra State Agency for Civic and Value Orientation, a socio-psychological initiative by Governor Soludo, which he believes could benefit from the psychologists’ expertise. Mefor called for a collaborative effort to tackle the moral and social challenges facing the youth in the region.
