The Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, has responded to the recently passed bill that establishes a joint account between the state and local governments, emphasizing that it aligns with the desires of Ndi Anambra for the delivery of democratic dividends directly to their communities.
Speaking during an interview with Arise Television on October 9, Dr. Mefor explained that the law is in line with Section 7 of the 1999 amended Constitution, which grants State Houses of Assembly the authority to regulate, administer, and finance local governments across the federation.
“The law provides a legal framework for the financial autonomy of local governments,” Dr. Mefor stated. He added that the constitution also places a duty on state governments to oversee the proper administration, including financial management, of local governments.
Dr. Mefor dismissed concerns that the state government intends to take control of local government funds, clarifying that local governments will remain responsible for administering their financial resources. He urged the public to understand that the law is designed to improve transparency and ensure efficient use of funds at the grassroots level.
