In an effort to promote socio-economic development in Nigeria, MasterCard Foundation, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programmes (UNDP), hosted a four-day training program titled *”Young Africa Innovates”* for youths in Anambra State. The event, which began on October 14, 2024, at ASSU Hall, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, aimed to empower young innovators aged 18-35 and strengthen innovation hubs and local institutions.
Chiwetalu Okosi, the UNDP Focal Person for the South East, emphasized that the initiative seeks to support innovators from diverse backgrounds, providing them with technical assistance to test and scale their solutions. She noted that Anambra, selected as the pilot state, was chosen for its robust entrepreneurial environment, particularly in commerce.
From 3,000 applicants, 300 participants were selected for the training, which was conducted in two batches. After pitching their ideas, the top 30 innovators will advance to an incubator stage, receiving seed money, mentorship, and further support to refine their ideas.
Participants, like fashion designer Mrs. Okonkwo Patience Onyinyechi, expressed gratitude for the program, calling it a life-changing opportunity that will enhance their businesses and overall skillsets. Resource persons, including Idika Chidimma, praised the initiative for equipping local talents to address challenges in the commerce sector and improve their communities.
