Starting November 1, 2024, Air Peace will increase its one-way flight ticket from Lagos to Abuja to N200,000, marking a significant hike amid Nigeria’s struggling economy. The rising cost of aviation operations has driven several airlines to increase their fares, leaving many passengers seeking alternatives such as road transport.
A survey conducted on Monday revealed that Air Peace’s N200,000 fare is the highest among domestic airlines. In comparison, Aero fares range from N94,000 to over N109,000, Arik Air charges between N104,405 and N139,292, while Ibom Air tickets are priced between N124,000 and N133,000 for the same route.
The increase in airfare has led to more passengers being stranded at airports, particularly on the busy Lagos-Abuja and Abuja-Lagos routes, as many struggle to secure seats due to high prices.
An Air Peace official, speaking anonymously, attributed the price hike to Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions and high operational costs. “We are bleeding as an aviation company,” the official stated, citing government taxes and rising expenses as major challenges.
Efforts to reach Toyin Olajide, Air Peace’s Chief Operating Officer, for further clarification were unsuccessful.
Frequent flyers, such as businessman Adeleke Aina, expressed frustration over the escalating airfares. “I will be left with no other option than to take road transport as my new means of movement,” he lamented, criticizing the government for its inaction regarding the situation.
