Omowunmi, the widow of late Nigerian singer and rapper Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has agreed to a Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) test to confirm the paternity of their son, Liam. This decision comes after Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, filed a court suit requesting the DNA test. Efforts to reach a resolution through alternative dispute resolution initially failed, leading to ongoing court proceedings in Lagos.
Both parties have now reached a settlement, with Omowunmi consenting to the DNA test, which will be conducted at a government or accredited private medical facility in Lagos or an agreed location outside the state. Under the terms, Mohbad’s father has committed to covering the DNA test expenses. The court appointed officers to supervise the testing process to ensure its reliability and ordered that each party bear their own costs for the legal case, excluding the DNA-related fees.
Mohbad’s untimely death at 27 has been shrouded in controversy, prompting public scrutiny. Previously signed to Marlian Music, owned by Naira Marley, he left the label in February 2022. Following his death, the Lagos State Police Command launched a special investigation, leading to the arrest of Naira Marley and Lagos socialite Sam Larry, among others. An autopsy was conducted after Mohbad’s body was exhumed on September 21, 2023, in an effort to uncover the cause of his death.
International observers have raised concerns about the fairness of the ongoing coroner’s inquest, noting issues like adjournments and perceived interference during cross-examinations. They have called for transparency, equity, and accountability in the proceedings to ensure justice for Mohbad.
