In support of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision for a cleaner, greener, and healthier Anambra State, Hon. Emeka Orji, Chairman of Onitsha South Local Government Area, has awarded a sweeping contract for major roads in the area to Rytec Company Limited. The move aims to maintain cleanliness along key routes, especially on recently constructed roads.
Hon. Orji explained that the decision is in line with the governor’s environmental agenda, stating that it is unacceptable for newly built roads to be cluttered with waste. “Onitsha South under my watch will fully support Governor Soludo’s agenda for a pristine Anambra,” he affirmed.
Mrs. Chioma Eze, Coordinator of Onitsha South Street Sweepers, praised Hon. Orji for the contract, noting that the street sweeping initiative began in February 2024 but was temporarily paused for election activities. Mrs. Eze explained that more workers have now been recruited, including men tasked with removing sand on Niger Street to assist women who previously struggled with heavy lifting.
“Our team resumed work this Monday, covering areas such as Niger Street, Zik’s Avenue, Ochanja Roundabout, Biafra Market, Bridgehead (Ogbo-Osisi), and occasionally Port Harcourt Road,” she shared. Mrs. Eze highlighted that the sweepers, mainly widows and individuals from low-income backgrounds across Onitsha South’s 17 wards, are grateful for Hon. Orji’s support.
This sweeping initiative aims to enhance cleanliness in Onitsha South, aligning with state-wide efforts to improve the quality of life and environmental health for Anambra residents.
