Examiners with Nigeria’s National Examinations Council (NECO) are preparing for a nationwide protest over delayed wages, expressing frustration over unpaid entitlements for grading student exams earlier this year. After grading 2024 exam papers, many examiners reportedly have not received payment, despite the exam results being released more than a month ago.
In a November 8 letter to NECO’s Chief Registrar, examiners from Kano State highlighted grievances and sought immediate intervention, warning that NECO’s continued delay undermines morale in Nigeria’s educational sector, especially amid economic challenges. The issue has sparked solidarity across states, including Plateau, as examiners rally for timely compensation.
With mounting calls for NECO to act, some analysts warn that if the protest proceeds, it could disrupt NECO’s upcoming operations, potentially affecting future exam preparations and educational morale. So far, NECO representatives have not responded to these concerns.
