The Anambra State Government, through its Primary Health Care Development Agency, has convened a one-day stakeholders’ engagement meeting in Awka to intensify efforts in scaling up the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination program.
The meeting brought together traditional rulers, community leaders, development partners, and other key stakeholders to strategize on improving vaccine coverage for children aged 9 to 15.
Speaking at the event, the State Health Educator, Mrs. Uju Onwuegbuzina, highlighted the significance of the gathering in reviewing the progress and challenges encountered since the HPV vaccine was introduced. She stressed the need to implement best practices to enhance vaccine acceptance and reach the target population effectively.
Dr. Nnamdi Uliagbafusi, Director of Disease Control and Immunization at the agency, called on religious leaders and community influencers to debunk myths and misconceptions surrounding the HPV vaccine. He emphasized the critical role of traditional and religious leaders in ensuring the success of the program.
Mr. Akpan Etop, a Consultant with the Clinton Health Access Initiative, announced that vaccine intensification efforts would focus on Orumba North, Aguata, and Idemili North Local Government Areas from December 3 to 7, 2024. He explained that these areas had shown low performance during the initial vaccination campaign.
The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the HPV vaccine reaches every eligible child in the state, as part of broader efforts to safeguard public health and prevent HPV-related illnesses.
