The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has commended President Bola Tinubu for the successful revitalization of the Port Harcourt Refinery, marking a major step toward bolstering Nigeria’s energy security and economic growth.
In a statement issued in Lagos, NSE President, Mrs. Margaret Aina Oguntala, lauded the Federal Government’s commitment to rejuvenating critical infrastructure. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) announced on Wednesday the resumption of operations at the refinery following a comprehensive rehabilitation process.
With an initial processing capacity of 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day, the refinery is expected to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products while enhancing local refining capabilities.
“The reopening of the Port Harcourt Refinery underscores the government’s dedication to achieving self-sufficiency in petroleum refining and enhancing Nigeria’s energy independence,” Oguntala stated.
### **Celebrating Nigerian Engineers**
The NSE President highlighted the crucial role played by Nigerian engineers in the rehabilitation project, emphasizing their exceptional expertise and dedication. She noted that the achievement showcases the capacity of local professionals to execute large-scale, impactful projects, serving as an inspiration to the engineering community.
“This significant achievement exemplifies the power of collaboration among government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and professional bodies in driving the nation’s development forward,” she added.
### **Economic and Industrial Benefits**
Oguntala expressed optimism that the refinery’s revitalization would stimulate industrial growth, create job opportunities, and promote economic diversification. She reaffirmed the NSE’s commitment to supporting initiatives that leverage Nigerian talent for sustainable national development.
The Port Harcourt Refinery’s reopening represents a milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its energy infrastructure and reduce its reliance on imports, signaling a brighter future for the country’s energy sector.
