United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) has donated Aquared device (flood detective gadgets) to Anambra State Government and was received on behalf of the government by the Commissioner for Environment, Engr Dr Felix Odimegwu at Jerome Udorji Secretariat, Awka.
Speaking during the handover, the Project Management Senior Analyst, UNOPS Nigeria, Megumi Otsu Stated that Anambra state was one of the flood prone areas in the country, hence the flood detection gadget was a must have for the state
Megumi expressed that the device will measure the temperature, humidity, temperature, water velocity, river level variables, meteorological data, upstream water level, downstream water level, elevation/slope, stream power index, land use cover, topographic roughness index, topographic wetness index and distance from drainage of our water bodies. She also stated that the device will get/capture early warning signals and dictate flood level for both ground and underground water.
The Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Dr. Felix Odimegwu who took delivery of the gadgets on behalf of Anambra State Ministry of budget, Economic Planning and The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) appreciated Unops for their prompt, thoughtful and timely intervention as the gadgets according to him would help the state to prepare ahead of time when flooding come knocking
Odimegwu affirmed that the state would deploy it in the Anambra waters to measure readings at the water front. He promised that the devise would be handled by skilled personnel and supervised accordingly as that would help mitigate the negative effects of climate change.
