Nigerian rapper Ice Prince has clarified a common misconception regarding African artists at the BET Awards. He stated that he, and not Davido, was the first African artist to receive a BET award on stage during the ceremony.
Speaking on a recent episode of the podcast *Listening*, Ice Prince, who won the BET Best International Act, Africa Award in 2013, emphasized that he broke the tradition of African artists being awarded backstage at the event.
“I am the first African artiste to go on a BET stage and receive an award solo,” he said, addressing the misattribution often given to Davido.
Davido, however, gained significant attention for his 2018 BET Awards acceptance speech after winning the Best International Act award. In his speech, he advocated for stronger collaborations between African and US artists, a moment that resonated widely with fans and industry watchers alike.
The clarification by Ice Prince sheds light on the evolution of African representation at international award shows and the milestones achieved by Nigerian artists.
