The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State, Mrs. Joyce Alexander, has clarified that both the FRSC and the Police are legally empowered to check vehicle particulars on the roads.
This statement addresses ongoing public debates over which agency holds the sole responsibility for such checks.
Mrs. Alexander made the clarification during an appearance on ABS’s interactive program, *Ask The Commissioner,* which examined achievements in the state’s transport sector and preparations for Christmas traffic management. The program also featured the Commissioner for Transport, Mrs. Patricia Igwebuike.
Highlighting traffic plans for the festive season, Mrs. Alexander revealed that the FRSC commenced its “Operation Zero Tolerance” on December 15. Officers have been deployed to high-traffic areas to ensure smooth and accident-free travel, with rescue teams on standby for emergencies. She noted the introduction of mobile courts to prosecute traffic offenders and a reduction in checkpoints in busy zones.
Commending the Anambra State government for its road construction and rehabilitation efforts, she said these improvements have facilitated the Corps’ operations.
Commissioner Igwebuike also highlighted advancements in the state’s aviation and river port sectors, alongside ongoing road projects, as pivotal to improving transportation in Anambra. She urged parents to avoid carrying children on their laps or in the front seats while driving, citing the risk of fatal accidents.
Adding to the discussion, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, encouraged residents to celebrate Christmas responsibly and remain vigilant about their safety during the festive season.
