The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu, has inaugurated committees to organize and screen candidates for the election of his successor, scheduled for January 2025.
During the event held in Owerri on Friday, Chukwu urged the committees to ensure a credible and peaceful election. His tenure, which began after the death of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, ends on January 10, 2025. He was appointed under the doctrine of necessity to complete the four-year tenure allocated to Imo State, disrupted by the deaths of Prof. George Obiozor in 2022 and Chief Iwuanyanwu in 2024.
“We’ll not take excuses. Your actions will be monitored, and history will judge you based on your commitment to fairness and excellence,” Chukwu emphasized.
The Electoral Committee is chaired by Chief Ejiofor Onyia, with Okpani Nkama Jr. as Secretary. Onyia assured stakeholders of a transparent process and called for cooperation from all Igbo leaders and aspirants.
The Screening Committee, led by Dr. Eme Okoro with Prof. Fabian Onah as Secretary, was also tasked with upholding integrity in the selection process.
Prominent members include Amb. Eddy Onuoha, Chief Damian Okeke Ogene, Prof. Augustine Oke Okolie, Dr. Mrs. Kema Chikwe, and many others from diverse backgrounds committed to the Igbo cause.
The screening team features personalities like Mr. Ndubisi Jaja-Wachukwu, Evangelist Iwuchukwu Ezenwafor, and Chief Austin Aniagoh, among others.
The committees are expected to oversee a smooth transition, ensuring that the apex Igbo sociocultural organization continues its legacy of promoting unity and excellence.
