The Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC), Abuja, has applauded the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for its significant contributions to youth empowerment, rural development, human capital development, and innovative digitalization of operations.
Major General A.A. Tarfa, Team Lead of the Leadership and Strategic Studies Course 3/2024 from the centre, expressed this commendation during an academic tour of the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja. The visit included 35 participants, comprising one Colonel and 34 Lieutenant Colonels.
General Tarfa praised the NYSC’s involvement in key national assignments such as elections, population census, and immunization campaigns, as well as its roles in leadership training and promoting national unity. He noted that the visit aimed to provide participants with a deeper understanding of the Scheme’s operations and its contributions to Nigeria’s development.
The NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Y.D. Ahmed, highlighted the Scheme’s impact, stating that over three million ex-Corps Members have been empowered through its Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme. He also noted the achievements of the NYSC Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD), which has provided free medical services to millions of underprivileged Nigerians, and the Legal Aid Corps, which has facilitated the release of inmates unable to afford court fines.
Additionally, the Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics, Alhaji Ahmed Wada Ikaka, provided an overview of the NYSC’s history and achievements. He revealed that 5,820,170 ex-Corps Members have participated in the Scheme since its inception, with 3,350,854 acquiring vocational skills through SAED.
The tour concluded with a guided visit to the NYSC digital museum, as well as its radio and television studios. Participants lauded the Scheme’s efforts in fostering national unity and enhancing Nigeria’s development trajectory.
