The House of Representatives has directed Multichoice, owners of DStv and GOtv, to suspend the implementation of its recent subscription rate hike due to the current economic situation in the country.
Multichoice had announced that from March 1, 2025, DStv premium bouquet subscribers would pay N44,500, up from N37,000, while Compact+ subscribers would pay N30,000, up from N25,000. The Compact bouquet price was also increased to N19,000 from N17,000.
The directive followed a motion by Esosa Iyawe, a member representing Edo State under the All Progressives Congress. He noted that the increase was the second in less than a year, with the previous hike in May 2024 sparking public outcry.
Iyawe expressed concern that Multichoice’s dominance in the pay-TV sector made its price changes widely impactful, especially without significant improvements in service quality.
The House mandated its Committee on Commerce to investigate the price hike and report back within four weeks.
