The newly appointed Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, has pledged to lead the Scheme with transparency and dedication to enhance productivity among staff and Corps members.
He made this commitment today during the official handover ceremony at the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, as he assumed office as the 23rd Director General of the Scheme.
General Nafiu outlined his vision to strengthen the NYSC job creation initiative, enabling more Corps members to access opportunities in the private sector during and after their service year. He described the Scheme, established in 1973, as a vital strategy for fostering national unity, socio-cultural integration, and mutual understanding among Nigerian youths.
The new DG emphasized that Corps members’ welfare would be a top priority under his leadership, with plans to improve camp feeding, hygiene, and kitting services.
“My team and I will work tirelessly to reposition the Scheme, ensuring that excellence thrives. I seek the understanding and support of all staff to drive the programmes that will enhance both staff and Corps members’ welfare,” he said.
General Nafiu appealed to stakeholders and the public to support the Scheme, while commending the dedication of both past and present NYSC staff in upholding the Scheme’s mandate. He also promised to explore innovative approaches while building on the legacies of his predecessors.
In his remarks, the outgoing DG, Brigadier General Yushau Dogara Ahmed, appreciated the support he received during his two-year tenure and urged staff to extend the same cooperation to his successor.
