The Mass Communication department of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, marked a significant milestone with its first-ever Career Development Summit, emphasizing the need for professionals to combine versatility with specialization within the expansive field of mass communication.
Themed “Exploring Career Opportunities in the Unbundled Mass Communication Curriculum,” the summit brought together participants from the student body, faculty, and industry experts.
Professor Chinyere Okunna, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic at Paul University, Awka, delivered the lead presentation, highlighting the innovative approach of the unbundled curriculum. She explained that the curriculum redefines the study of mass communication, focusing on specific disciplines such as journalism, broadcasting, film and multimedia studies, information and media studies, public relations, advertising, development communication, and strategic communication.
Professor Okunna emphasized the importance of conducting a SWOT analysis and setting clear life goals, urging aspiring professionals to value knowledge acquisition.
Dr. Valentine Obienyem, Media Adviser to a Labour Party Presidential Candidate, emphasized the pivotal role of mass communication in nurturing various disciplines within its domain. He underscored the importance of diligence, focus, and passion in career pursuits, urging students to seek mentorship and set achievable career goals.
Dr. Chioma Agbssiemelo, Head of the Mass Communication department at Unizik, expressed the department’s commitment to preparing students for industry realities amidst curriculum reforms. She acknowledged the support of the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Charles Esimone, in facilitating the summit, aligning with the institution’s vision of excellence.
Professor Frank-Collins Okafor, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, Chairman of the Planning Committee, encouraged students to seize the opportunity for personal development and utilize insights gained from the summit to shape their futures.
Distinguished speakers at the summit included Mrs. Ify Unachukwu from ABS, Comrade Aloysius Atta from Sun Newspaper, Mr. Emeka Monye from Arise TV, and Mr. Tony Ujubuonu, MD/CEO of Anambra State Advertisement Agency, among others.
Other dignitaries like Dr Uche Ekwugha, Dr Adaobi Okeke, Dr Ekene Okafor, Mrs Elozona Okpala, and students attended the occasion.
