In a bid to bolster healthcare resources within the region, the Anambra State Government has secured approval to establish a cutting-edge College of Nursing and Midwifery in the Ekwulobia area of Aguata Local Government Area.
The revelation was made by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, during the recently convened 2024 First Quarter Health Sector Partnership meeting, jointly organized by the State Ministry of Health in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO).
During the two-day gathering, Dr. Obidike extended gratitude to all development partners, with a special acknowledgment of WHO’s significant contributions towards enhancing healthcare delivery to the people of Anambra.
The essence of the meeting, as explained by Dr. Obidike, was to review the previous year’s achievements and shortcomings, aligning them with the annual operational guidelines rigorously.
The commissioner disclosed the state’s intention to inaugurate the new nursing institution within the next 14 months, aiming to cultivate a robust cadre of healthcare professionals to augment the state’s healthcare workforce.
Adding her voice to the discourse, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Obiageli Uchebo, reiterated appreciation to all development partners and emphasized the importance of earnestly pursuing the objectives outlined in Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s healthcare agenda.
In a goodwill message, Dr. Bonos Mohammed, the Anambra State WHO Coordinator, commended Governor Soludo for fostering an enabling environment for development partners and announced WHO’s commitment of N100 million in support of the state’s healthcare initiatives for the year.
Various stakeholders, including Family Health International (FHI360) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), also conveyed their goodwill messages during the event.
The meeting featured an overview by Mrs. Edith Nwachukwu, the Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics, while Pharmacist Chisom Uchem, the Executive Secretary of the Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency, delivered lectures on strategies to enhance healthcare quality through the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF).
Among the attendees were prominent figures such as the Anambra State Director of Public Health, Dr. Afam Aneme, and the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu, underscoring the significance of the gathering in charting the course for Anambra’s healthcare future.
