Iba Gani Adams, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, has expressed disappointment in President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of becoming indifferent, insensitive, and unresponsive to the economic struggles of Nigerians. In an open letter titled “President Bola Tinubu, Time is Going,” Adams highlighted the worsening state of the economy and the escalating insecurity in the country.
Adams referenced the rapid rise in fuel prices, from less than N200 per litre in May 2023 to over N1000 today, as well as the devaluation of the naira, which has plummeted from N740 to N1,600 against the dollar. He criticized the economic strategies of key figures in Tinubu’s administration, particularly Finance Minister Wale Edun and Central Bank Governor Yemi Cardoso, both of whom served with Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos State governor.
The letter also addressed the surge in insecurity, with kidnappings and killings becoming rampant despite Tinubu’s promises to tackle the issue. Adams expressed concern that Nigerians who protest the government’s actions are being unjustly arrested and charged with treason, a stark contrast to the activism Tinubu once championed.
Adams warned that the economic policies, particularly the recent fuel price hike, are pushing Nigerians to the brink and could lead to widespread unrest. He called on Tinubu to be more responsive to the suffering of the citizens and reconsider the administration’s approach to governance.
