The Students Union Government (SUG) of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), in Ondo State, has written to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, calling for immediate action to address the growing insecurity around the campus.
The appeal comes in the wake of the tragic shooting of a 300-level student, identified as Emmanuel, by unidentified gunmen in a private student hostel near the university. The SUG highlighted that this incident is part of a troubling pattern of violence, including armed robberies targeting students.
In a letter to the state government, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent on Wednesday, the SUG emphasized the urgent need for increased security measures in the university town.
“Recent events have turned the Akungba community into a dangerous terrain, a place where armed thieves have had their field day and resorted to butchering students with knives and broken bottles after robbing them. This level of violence is unprecedented and has created an atmosphere of fear and anxiety among students. Many of us can no longer sleep with our two eyes closed; we are left to constantly worry about our safety,” the SUG stated.
The union urged immediate action from the Inspector-General of Police, the Ondo State Government, and the Police Commissioner to deploy additional security personnel to Akungba and the university campus. They believe that the presence of more security officers will help deter criminals and provide reassurance to the student body.
“It is imperative that immediate measures are taken to restore safety and security in our community. The current situation requires a robust and coordinated response from all relevant authorities. We are urging the Inspector-General of Police, Ondo State Government and Police Commissioner to take decisive but immediate action by deploying additional security personnel to the Akungba community and our university,” the SUG added.
The SUG also stressed the importance of cooperation from the host community in addressing these security concerns and called for a security dialogue between the host community and the state government.
The union’s plea underscores the critical need for enhanced security to ensure the safety of all students and residents in the Akungba area.
