Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, reflected on the progress made by his administration while acknowledging that there is still much work ahead during a visit by the team of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International Idea).
Otti made these remarks on Monday when he received the team led by Mr. Danladi Plang, Head of Programme in Nigeria for the International Idea, an intergovernmental organization supporting sustainable democracy worldwide.
Abia State was selected as the focal state for phase II of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption program, funded by the European Union, following ongoing reforms in the state. Phase I of the program, which began in 2017, concluded last year with five participating focal states.
During the meeting, Otti emphasized the government’s commitment to good governance, zero tolerance for corruption, and protection of vulnerable groups. He expressed gratitude for the selection of Abia as a focal state and pledged the government’s support for the program’s success.
Plang commended Otti for his leadership qualities and announced the extension of the program for another five years, with Abia and Plateau states joining other focal states for Phase II. He highlighted the importance of the program and sought Otti’s support and cooperation.
Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ikechukwu Uwanna, emphasized leveraging International Idea’s experience to enhance justice delivery in the state.
Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Ngozi Felix, expressed joy at the program’s inclusion in Abia, anticipating its benefits for women, children, persons with disabilities, and vulnerable groups.
Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Kenneth Kalu, emphasized the program’s value in strengthening justice systems, even though its impact might not be as tangible as physical infrastructure projects.
