Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has assured the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN) of his administration’s full support for the proposed establishment of an oil refinery in the state. Governor Otti provided this assurance while receiving a delegation from PETAN led by its Chairman, Engr. Wole Ogunsanya.
During the meeting, Governor Otti emphasized the state government’s commitment to partnering with PETAN on the refinery project as a joint venture. He highlighted the untapped potential of Abia’s resources, particularly in areas beyond Ukwa West, which is currently the center of oil activities in the state.
“We have some assets that have been identified beyond Ukwa West,” Otti said. “Oil activities today in Abia are centered around Ukwa West, and I have it on good authority that other areas of the state have reserves that could be harnessed. Serious players can begin to explore places around Umunneochi and other areas.”
Governor Otti expressed his willingness to collaborate closely with PETAN, stating, “We take our partnership very seriously, and I want to thank you for identifying us as one of the first states. If there is any support you need, do not hesitate to reach out to us. I would like to be briefed every fortnight on how you are progressing.”
The Commissioner for Petroleum Resources, Professor Joel Ogbonna, also highlighted the significant potential this opportunity holds for Abia State. He noted that the state has about 100 capped oil wells yet to be tapped, and if realized, Abia could become a top player in the global oil industry.
Engr. Wole Ogunsanya, the Chairman of PETAN, explained that their visit was aimed at supporting the state in realizing its full potential in the oil sector. He mentioned that Abia would be the first state where PETAN would execute this refinery project, which is expected to benefit both the state and its neighboring states.
“We have engaged in discussions with the government on having a refinery in the state which would serve the state and neighboring states,” Ogunsanya said. “We own the equipment that would find the oil and bring it out of the ground, making the work easy for us.”
Ogunsanya stressed that PETAN, an indigenous company providing oil and gas services, is fully equipped to collaborate with the Abia state government in establishing a refinery. This joint venture model is expected to increase the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR), create foreign exchange, and provide employment opportunities.
The proposed partnership marks a significant step towards leveraging Abia’s untapped resources and fostering economic growth in the region.
