The Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) Development Control Unit has evacuated occupants from a distressed building in Ifite Awka to prevent potential danger.
Deputy Commander of the ACTDA Development Control Unit, Mr. Ukachukwu Okonkwo, informed the residents that the agency’s primary goal is to safeguard lives, as the building was on the brink of collapse. Despite receiving eviction notices from the landlord, the occupants had refused to vacate, prompting ACTDA’s intervention to avert a potential tragedy.
Mr. Okonkwo stated that the agency plans to collaborate with the building owner to explore possible remedies; if not, they will proceed with demolition to eliminate the threat to public safety.
The twin structure, located at Dubai Lodge on Five Decking Street, primarily houses students and shows severe distress with visible cracks.
The building’s caretaker, who requested anonymity, praised ACTDA for their timely intervention and expressed confidence in the agency’s capacity and expertise to handle the situation effectively.
ACTDA Managing Director and CEO, Mr. Ossy Onuko, commended his team for their efforts and urged Awka residents to report any distressed buildings to the agency for prompt action. He emphasized that Governor Chukwuma Soludo prioritizes the safety of Ndi Anambra and aims to prevent any avoidable tragedies.
