ACTDA Launches Week-Long Intensive Drainage Desilting Campaign

The Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) has kicked off a one-week aggressive desilting operation along Zik Avenue in Awka, as part of its ongoing “Operation Clean and Green” initiative. The targeted water channels span approximately 7.5 kilometers within Awka South Local Government Area.

Addressing reporters during the commencement of the exercise, Mr. Ossy Onuko, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ACTDA, highlighted the recurring issue of flooding in the area following rainfall. He expressed concern over the negative habit of some residents who indiscriminately dump waste into the gutters, exacerbating the problem.

Mr. Onuko underscored the agency’s commitment to ensuring the thorough clearance of water channels to facilitate smooth water flow during rainy seasons. Despite similar efforts undertaken in the past, he lamented the accumulation of debris within the channels, necessitating the current desilting operation.

Emphasizing the importance of proper waste disposal, Mr. Onuko revealed that ACTDA has a dedicated sensitization unit tasked with educating residents on responsible waste management practices. He emphasized that sustainable development in Anambra State hinges on the collective adoption of behaviors that promote cleanliness and environmental preservation. Additionally, the agency has provided waste receptacles to encourage proper waste disposal.

Chief Gab Tabugbo, a trader along Zik Avenue, expressed gratitude to ACTDA and Governor Chukwuma Soludo for addressing the recurring issue of flooding in the area. He urged the agency to address the practice of covering water channels with concrete slabs, which contributes to flooding incidents.

Mr. Aiza Nwosu, Head of ACTDA’s Sensitization Unit, stressed the importance of enforcing strict penalties for environmental offenders. He highlighted ongoing efforts to educate residents on responsible environmental practices.

Residents, including Mr. Nwabueze Ezeobi from Umuogbunu Awka, commended ACTDA and the Anambra State Government for their intervention, noting the imminent threat of flooding to their properties.
