In a bid to enhance safety and order in Awka, the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) has banned the crossing of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway at the UNIZIK Temporary Site junction through drainage channels, mandating the use of the pedestrian bridge instead.
According to Mr. Ossy Onuko, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ACTDA, this measure aims to prevent accidents, often fatal, and promote discipline in the area. He emphasized that violators will be fined N5,000 and questioned why individuals risk their lives by avoiding the pedestrian bridge provided by the state government.
Mr. Onuko warned that the agency has established a robust enforcement team to apprehend anyone disregarding the new directive, regardless of their status. He also noted that ACTDA has removed traders from the pedestrian bridge and ensures its cleanliness.
Chief Joseph Udoba praised ACTDA for its efforts, expressing disbelief at the risks people take on the expressway and encouraging sustained enforcement. Trader Mrs. Aghanti Adenike welcomed the penalties, believing they will deter dangerous crossings, especially in the current harsh economic climate.
