The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has called for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture to address the growing resurgence of kidnapping and banditry across the country. This was outlined in a communiqué issued after a caucus meeting held in Akure, Ondo State, at the residence of its leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.
The communiqué, signed by Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Jare Ajayi, emphasized the urgent need to rework the nation’s security framework to ensure that Nigerians can live and move freely without the fear of abduction or harassment.
“The security architecture of the country needs to be overhauled to ensure that Nigerians can live and move about without the fear of being kidnapped or harassed in any way,” the statement read.
Afenifere also urged the government to expedite actions on the establishment of state police and advocated for the deployment of modern technology in combating banditry and terrorism.
The group further called for the licensing of the regional security outfit, Amotekun, to carry lethal weapons, and recommended greater cooperation between Amotekun and other security agencies. It also suggested the installation of command and control posts across all local government areas to facilitate real-time information sharing, a practice common in many developed and developing countries.
