Ajegunle Residents Protest Over Alleged Unjust Billing by Eko Electricity Distribution Company

Residents of Ajegunle in the Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos State have petitioned the management of Eko Electricity Distribution Plc (EKEDP) over what they describe as multiple and unjust billing practices.

During a protest on Tuesday, the residents, under the banner of the Ajegunle Peoples Movement, expressed their grievances about exorbitant electricity charges. In a petition addressed to EKEDP’s acting Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Rekhiat Momoh, they accused the company of imposing inflated bills without following regulations set by the National Electricity Regulation Commission (NERC).

According to the petition, EKEDP has been issuing multiple bills to single meters, with charges ranging from N40,000 to N150,000. In addition, consumers are being billed a flat rate of N7,808, allegedly to cover penalties imposed on EKEDP by NERC for improper billing practices.

The petition highlighted: “Consumers receive two distinct bills — a regular bill ranging from N40,000 to N150,000, and an additional flat-rate bill of N7,808. This has become a common occurrence despite tenants using minimal electricity. We believe this extra charge is meant to recover NERC’s penalties against EKEDP for past overbilling practices.”

The residents, who identified affected areas as Etugbo Street, Layinka Street, Boundary Road, and others, further noted that erratic power supply has severely impacted businesses and neighborhood security.

They are demanding an immediate halt to the multiple billing system, the withdrawal of extra charges, and a fair billing process that reflects actual electricity usage. The group also called for free prepaid meters for all consumers and requested a town hall meeting with EKEDP management to address the issue.

Efforts to reach EKEDP’s Apapa District spokesperson, Chioma Rose, were unsuccessful, as she did not respond to calls or text messages at the time of reporting.
