Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi has shed light on his decision to represent Nigeria at the senior level, despite having the option to play for England.
Iwobi, formerly of Arsenal, progressed through the Arsenal youth ranks and represented England at U16, U17, and U18 levels before committing to Nigeria. He made his competitive debut for the Super Eagles against Egypt in an African Cup of Nations qualifier on March 25, 2016.
Now playing for Fulham after a stint at Everton, Iwobi explained that although he was well-treated by the English Football Association, his Nigerian heritage played a crucial role in his decision.
“I wouldn’t say I have any regrets. I respected England; they gave me a lot of opportunities and I was able to make them proud,” Iwobi said in an interview with Hotsports Nigeria. “But I feel more at home with Nigeria. This is where I represent my family and everyone. I’ve grown up in a Nigerian culture, so I have no regrets picking Nigeria over England.”
Iwobi highlighted the warm reception he received from the Nigerian team from his first day, which made the transition seamless.
“I’ve been here for a while now and I’m familiar with the team. Even from the first time I came, they always made me feel welcome,” he added. “I enjoy myself not just during matches but also in training. In the camp, it feels like one big family, which makes it easier for me to express myself and participate.”
Reflecting on his international career, Iwobi expressed his satisfaction and optimism for the future. “I’m enjoying my time and hopefully there are more years to come as well,” he concluded.
