On November 1st, 2024, All Hallows Seminary in Onitsha celebrated a century of educational and spiritual impact with a vibrant cultural display. The centenary celebration was led by the seminary’s Rector, Rev. Fr. Paschal Onunkwo, who emphasized the importance of cultural heritage in priestly formation and evangelization.
“Culture can never go into extinction. At All Hallows Seminary, we recognize culture as essential to life,” Rev. Fr. Onunkwo stated. “Effective evangelization requires speaking the language of the people. By integrating cultural understanding into our formation, we ensure that the Gospel resonates deeply within communities.”
Rev. Fr. Onunkwo, who took on the role in 2021, highlighted his achievements in human formation, infrastructure improvements, and academic excellence. Key accomplishments under his tenure include the renovation of dilapidated buildings, the reconstruction of a 45-year-old school road, installation of a new school gate to replace the original 72-year-old gate, and support from alumni in renovating the Father’s House. He also celebrated the seminary’s outstanding results in external exams and achievements in music.
“Reaching 100 years is a testament to God’s favor. We celebrate not only the institution but also our alumni – both priests and laymen – whose contributions to society inspire us,” Rev. Fr. Onunkwo said. He expressed gratitude for the community’s dedication and looked forward to nurturing future leaders who would positively impact society.
The centenary event also honored individuals and groups who have contributed to the seminary’s legacy, including the Catholic Women Organization (CWO), which supports the seminary by providing food for seminarians and subsidizing school fees to make education accessible to all.
Among notable attendees was Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, who joined the seminary community in commemorating the institution’s 100-year journey.
