Anambra State House of Assembly has successfully passed the Anambra State Peace Building and Conflict Management Agency Bill 2024 into law. This legislation aims to foster peace and manage conflicts within the state, aligning with the Governor’s broader agenda of infrastructure, economic transformation, security, and social cohesion.
The bill’s passage followed a motion by the Majority Leader of the House, Honourable Ikenna Ofodeme, after extensive legislative discussions. The bill will become effective once it receives the Governor’s assent.
Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, emphasized the bill’s significance in preventing conflicts within the state. The bill was read for the third time and passed with unanimous support through a voice vote.
Dr. Jude Akpua, the bill’s sponsor and representative of Njikoka Constituency Two, highlighted its critical role in resolving conflicts across various aspects of life, including families and communities. He noted that the bill would reduce the number of people in correctional facilities due to conflicts by promoting mediation and negotiation efforts.
As Deputy Majority Leader, Dr. Akpua explained that the newly established agency will have a broad mandate to promote peace through proactive measures. These measures include identifying potential sources of conflict, mediation, negotiation efforts, and implementing peace-building initiatives across Anambra State.
